Charter Member: Evelyn Grant

Evelyn Coffman Grant became a charter member of Calvary Church as a young teenager. She remembers the excitement and anticipation of those early days as they met in their new church at the Ebell Club. She also remembers her surprise in discovering that the people moving into the house directly across the street from her family were none other than the new pastor of Calvary Church and his family. This was a time filled with many wonderful memories and friendships that remain to this day.

Evelyn met Bill Grant at a Santa Ana High School football banquet, and the romance of a lifetime
began.  When Bill came to Calvary Church shortly after their meeting, a lifetime of service together
also began.

Their ministry at Calvary had its beginning with Evelyn teaching preschoolers with Lucille Stuck in the ladies lounge of the Ebell Club.  Bill began ushering and soon was appointed head usher. Their home was always open and often used for young peoples’ gatherings, women’s missionary meetings and Sunday School class parties. Bill later served as treasurer for many years and became the first Business Administrator of Calvary Church.

Evelyn continued ministering to the children, serving in the primary and junior departments where she started the first lending library for children.  Evelyn also served with our women's missionary groups and headed up a personnel committee to place volunteers in areas of service at Calvary Church. Bill took time out from his service at Calvary to serve in the Air Force during both World War II and Korea. After retirement, Evelyn and Bill served with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Guatemala and in Calgary, Canada.

Bill and Evelyn, along with three generations of their family, continue to faithfully attend and serve the Lord at Calvary Church. The fourth generation kids are attending Calvary Christian School.
