1st Grade Academic Overview


BIBLE

TEXT: New International Version
Bible Truths (Bob Jones University Press)

This course covers: The God of Impossibilities, God’s New World, God’s Covenant with Abraham’s Family, Jesus - The Son of God, and Jesus Does the Impossible. Students will memorize weekly Bible verses and learn a character trait every month.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

TEXT / SOFTWARE: Kid Pix 3 (Broderbund)

Students receive a half-hour of instruction weekly in the computer lab. The first semester students use Kid Pix Deluxe, which develops their creative skills, hand/eye coordination and logic applications through art. Students learn basic pieces of computer hardware. Second semester, students are introduced to typing skills by using Kid Pix typing tool.

MATHEMATICS

TEXT: California Mathematics – Grade 1 (Scott Foresman, 2001)

By the end of grade one, students understand and use the concept of ones and tens in the place value system. Students add and subtract single and double digit math sentences. They measure with simple units and locate objects in space. Students also describe data and analyze, solve simple word problems, tell time to the hour and half hour, and learn the value/counting of money.

ENGLISH

TEXT: Coordinated with Reading Program (Macmillan McGraw Hill)
Step Up to Writing

Students will be taught to write using Step-Up-To-Writing. Complete sentences incorporate the use of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, compound words, contractions, suffixes and correct punctuation. Sequencing, alphabetizing, and rhyming words are also be included.

PENMANSHIP

Penmanship is coordinated with our total reading and phonics program.

PHONICS / READING

TEXT: Phonics / Phonemic Awareness (McMillian / McGraw Hill)

Students are taught to read phonetically. Sequence will begin with a review of consonants/short vowels and progress through long vowels and consonant blends.

SPELLING

TEXT: Spelling Practice Book (McMilliam / McGraw Hill)
Weekly Spelling Tests

Spelling is in correlation with the reading curriculum.

GRAMMAR

SCIENCE

Academic Overview Revised 1/28/2008 Grade 1
The science curriculum engages students in the areas of physical, earth and life sciences. These aspects are taught through hands-on activities of inquiry and discovery. Units of study are guided by Big Book curriculum about plants, animals, matter and the universe.

SOCIAL STUDIES

TEXT: School and Family (Houghton Mifflin)

In conjunction with the Big Book “School and Family”, students will be taught units about their world and their community. More specifically, these units will relate to school, town, countryside, cities and suburbs, countries, and the world. In addition students will be taught season units coordinating with events and holidays of the calendar year. These units include Apples, Thanksgiving, International Christmas Celebrations, missions, and various holidays including Presidents Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

MUSIC

Grades K-6 have music classes each week with the music teacher. Students are introduced to classical music, composers, instruments, hymns and hymn writers, folk music, and basic theory at each grade level. Instrumental music, choir, and fine art electives are offered beginning at 4th grade. Drama, instrumental music, and vocal music are offered as Jr. High elective classes.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education is a vital, integral part of Calvary Christian School curriculum. There is emphasis in the areas of running, jumping, catching, listening, and sportsmanship.
