Thanksgiving Offering

November 1, 2012

Dear Calvary Family,

We are certainly living in some challenging days. The headlines regarding our politicians and the financial problems surrounding us can get us down. Fortunately, we can continue to walk in faith and extend generosity to those in need because our hope is not in man or money, but our Lord.

Each Thanksgiving, we receive a special offering to minister to both a local ministry and one in another country. Our Reach: Local opportunity this year will be KidWorks’ brand new Bishop Manor site. For almost 20 years, KidWorks has operated in central Santa Ana, reaching out to at-risk kids and their families thru after-school tutoring, character development, sports programs, and biblically-based community development programs.

In the past two years, KidWorks has expanded their vision from having one primary community center in central Santa Ana site to developing satellite community centers all over the city. The first satellite community center opened almost 2 years ago on Townsend St. (a street named after Calvary missionary Cameron Townsend) and just this past year, a second center opened in east Santa Ana at the giant Bishop Manor apartment complex, located just 7 minutes away from the front door of Calvary’s Worship Center.

Bishop Manor was one of the most dangerous and notorious complexes in Orange County up until 2 years ago when over 50 gang members and leaders were arrested and removed. Since then, the community has changed and become a place where kids can actually leave their apartments to play outside. Supporting the new center financially would be a great way to continue this positive direction. Our Local Thanksgiving gift would go specifically towards the afterschool programs at Bishop Manor.

We will use the other half of the Thanksgiving offering to support our Reach: Global Missions work. Many of you know that our Calvary Missions Director, Liz Gold was in India last month meeting with missionaries and visiting the Joshua Vision India (JVI) center in Hyderabad. We have supported JVI through Partners International over the last 15 years, specifically helping to scholarship Master Teachers being trained at the JVI center to go back to their home areas and train 40 other pastors in church planting. Her trip provided the opportunity to see first-hand some of the amazing work being done. We would like to continue this partnership and provide JVI with funding for their women’s training center program as well as sponsor more JVI Master Teachers. Your extra gift will make a huge difference in the lives of people in these hard places of India.

Enclosed you will find a special envelope to be turned in with your regular offering on Sundays, or you may bring it with you to the Thanksgiving Day Service, November 22 in Samsvick Chapel at 10:00 am, as we all take time to thank our Lord for His many blessings to us. Also, remember that on Thanksgiving weekend, we will have One Service on Sunday, November 25, at 10:00 am in the Worship Center.

My desire is that we each give as the Lord has blessed and be sure to keep His priorities of caring for others as our commitment as well. I am constantly reminded of these words from 1 Chronicles 29:9 as the people came to worship the Lord with King David… “Then the people rejoiced because they had offered so willingly, for they made their offering to the Lord with a whole heart.” My prayer is that we are people who rejoice as we faithfully serve our Lord.

In His love,
David Mitchell, Senior Pastor
