Being a People of Prayer

9/19/24 | The Weekly | by Eric Wakeling

    Dear Calvary Family,

I desperately desire for us to be a people of prayer. My deep prayer is that we would all be consistently and continually listening to the Lord as we pray for how we should live our lives.

Last week I wrote about “being with God before doing for God.” This is prayer. Prayer isn’t just rattling off a list of needs and desires and struggles. Prayer isn’t even only about praising and adoring God with our words. Prayer is resting in God as well - just recognizing his presence with you and then sitting with him.

The more we spend time with God the more we realize who we are in Christ. When we sit with him we come to fully understand our true identity. We are redeemed children of the King who have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. We are in full submission to God while also being united with God in heart and purpose and mission. We are entrusted with spiritual authority from the Creator of the Universe! He wants to work in us and through us.

This should relieve so much anxiety in our lives. Sons and daughters of the King don’t need to worry. Princes and princesses don’t need to be afraid of fulfilling their roles in the Kingdom. They have their Father behind them. They carry the name of the King and all that entails.

This is a process of fully realizing our belovedness, our identity, and our authority.

My hope is that you will begin to spend time with the Lord and then know who you really are. And then out of that, you will recognize the power and authority that is given to you.

Try sitting with that this week. Just ask God to show you and then sit with him in silence.

If some Bible reading is helpful to get you started, try 1 John 3; Romans 8; Galatians 4-5; and John 14-15.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
    Eric Wakeling
