Day 9: Realign From Transaction To Worship

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”

Devotional · · · Sometimes we treat worship as “transaction.” We can leave a time of worship with the question “What did I get out of that experience?” We think that if we give God something then He is obligated to give us something back. While this becomes true in an indirect way, because of God’s amazing generosity toward us (Psalm 36:5-9; John 3:16), it is not the purpose of worship. The purpose is rooted in attributing to God His holiness and worth. We sacrifice because He is worthy of it. However, the beauty of worshiping God is that we do get something back! As we realign ourselves in true worship we not only learn more of who God is, but we learn more of who we are, why we are here, and how much God loves us! In this, we find ultimate fulfillment and fullness of life (John 10:10). An incredible byproduct of us worshiping God in spirit and truth.

Prayer · · · Gracious God, I ask you to change my expectation of what happens during worship. Rid my mind of the expectations I place on you while I am worshiping and allow me to focus on that which is important—who You are! In all times of my life God, may I bring a gift of surrender and sacrifice to you, no matter how I feel. Teach me to acknowledge Your holiness in all seasons of my life. You alone are the Creator of all things and worthy to receive all glory and honor and power! Thank you Lord for your unconditional love and acceptance of me. May my sacrifice of praise be pleasing to You.

Day 8: Realign From My Reality To God’s Reality

Psalm 90:2 "Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God."

Devotional · · · Our human tendency is to mistake our present reality as ultimate reality. We mistake the problems we are facing as the guiding force in our lives. We give those problems power over us in a way they do not deserve. Through worship, we allow the truth of God’s Word and the work of God’s Spirit to realign us to what is really going on. Our perspective shifts. We lift up our eyes, keeping them fixed on Jesus (Psalm 123:1; Hebrews 12:2). God lifts up our heads, raising us from low points in life (Psalm 3:3; Psalm 27:6). In worship we are realigned to the reality that our faithful God is completely in control and therefore warrants our adoration and obedience.

Prayer · · · Eternal God, help my worship to be true. May my understanding of my life be rooted in Your reality, not mine. There are so many things in my life that keep me from recognizing You as being in complete control. You are truly sovereign. You are fully able. You alone are God. And you are worthy of my praise in the midst of whatever circumstance I face today. My prayer is that those things would become apparent to me. Help me to keep my eye fixed on Jesus, lay aside any sin weighing me down and run the race well. Show me how my vision of you is clouded by the things of this world. May I learn to worship you in a way that allows the Holy Spirit to realign me to the reality of who You are.

Day 7: Remember His Generosity

Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”

Devotional · · · The extravagance of God’s generosity shines brightly in the darkness of mankind’s selfishness. We naturally hold on tightly to what we “own”, when He holds with open hands all that He has made to share with us His children. Consider how the Almighty God possesses all creation unto His own glory, yet shares it with us to enjoy. He has given all power, glory and authority to His Son, Jesus, who released it all in obedience and selfless sacrifice to redeem us (Philippians 2:6-11). We can trust in God’s lavish lovingkindness, and provision for us, both for eternity and for today; He is SO generous to provide for ALL that I need (Philippians 4:19).

Prayer · · · Lord God, I thank You for the amazing grace You show every day of my life that flows from Your generous heart. I am humbled to know that in Christ I share in Your inheritance, and believe You give all that I need for life today and forever. Thank You for Your greatest, selfless, and indescribable gift to me and the world in Jesus. Help me by Your Spirit to remember Your generosity and to reflect it in how I manage all I “have”; I know that everything I have is from You and really belongs to You. Give me the grace to relax my grip and give of myself more like You do.
