Sixth Grade

Academic Overview

Sixth grade is primarily a self-contained classroom program. Daily classroom studies include: reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies/science, and Bible. In addition, students meet with enrichment teachers for the following subjects each week: art (one 60-minute period), fine arts elective (one 60-minute period), physical education (two 50-minute periods), computer (one 50-minute period) and library (one 30-minute period).

Students receive four report cards throughout the year. These report cards measure progress in academic skills, work habits and citizenship. Teachers and parents meet for a conference at the end of the first quarter. Approximately 60 minutes of homework is given each weeknight in mathematics, grammar, reading or writing, and one hour of independent reading is expected per week.

Bible: Topical through both the Old and New Testament, Memory verses

Reading: Novels, Literary strategies, Non-fiction articles (quarterly book reports)

Math: Place value, Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Integers, Properties of 2D and 3D figures, Algebraic expressions, Graphing points on a coordinate plane

Science: Earth science: rocks, minerals, weathering and erosion, layers of the atmosphere, layers of the earth, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanos, the scientific method (Outdoor Education trip; group experiment project in the winter/ spring)

Social Studies: Ancient civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, India (comparison projects; Open House project)

Vocabulary: Spelling, Definitions, Synonyms, Antonyms, Usage in a sentence

Writing: Literature analysis, Poetry, Research essay, Narratives, Persuasive/argumentative unit, Speeches, Writing process

Grammar: Parts of speech, Various topics
