The Heart of Light the Night
Dear Calvary Family,
In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Jesus is the light and he is all about bringing light into the darkness.
Have you ever been scared of the dark? I have for sure. I used to always feel like something was hiding in the shadows or that something was creeping up behind me in the dark. But the wonderful thing about light is that darkness can’t push back against it. Even a tiny light wins. Even one little light can make you feel safe. That’s what Jesus does at an eternal level and for our everyday lives.
Then in Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
We are lights too! When we do good deeds and share good news, we are being the light of the world so that everyone will praise our God.
And really, that’s the heart of Light the Night. We are being the light of the world to our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and our whole community. This is why we take part in all the time, effort, and money that it “costs us” to put on this incredible event for our city. This is why we raise funds, donate candy, and serve at Light the Night.
This is why we invite people in our lives to come to Light the Night. It is a wonderful opportunity for people to step onto a church property for the first time or the first time in a long time. It’s a great building block to invite them to the Christmas Tree Lighting where they will also hear the Gospel and sing some carols along with all the fun games and animals. That’s another building block to invite them to our Christmas Candlelight services on December 23 and 24.
But more importantly, we have conversations with them along the way. For them to see that Jesus is the light of the world for them as well. For them to see that Jesus is God with Us. For them to see that they are loved by the God of the Universe. When you have these conversations, you’re not just being nice, you’re being a bringer of light who shows that the darkness never wins…because Jesus already has.
See ways you can help bless others this October 31 at Light the Night by praying, donating and signing up to serve before, during, or after at CalvaryLife.org/LTN.
You can also help spread the word by picking up invite cards this Sunday in the Lobby or sharing a post on Calvary's Facebook or Instagram.
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
