He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

11/20/25 | The Weekly | by Matt Doan

In 1958, the African American spiritual “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” climbed all the way to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100—the only Gospel song ever to do so. Sung by a British teenager named Laurie London, it became an instant sensation across both the United States and Europe (you can even watch his performance on the old Ed Sullivan Show on YouTube ). It’s hard to imagine something like that happening today!

The song echoes the truth of Psalm 95:4–5:
“In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.”

Here is the encouraging reality behind those lyrics:
If God holds the whole world in His hands, then He holds our individual worlds in His hands as well.

We can rest in Him. We can trust Him.

This Sunday is our Fall Reach Global Sunday, where we’ll hear stories of God’s work in Europe, Africa, and Latin America. As we listen, we’ll be reminded again that the God who holds the world also lovingly holds you and me.

Below is our schedule for the day—come and be encouraged by God’s hand at work around the globe!

I love the simple closing lines of the song:
He’s got you and me, brother, in His hands…
He’s got the whole world in His hands.
He’s got you and me, sister, in His hands…
He’s got the whole world in His hands.

He’s got everybody here in His hands…
He’s got the whole world in His hands.

May you sense God’s hand on your life this weekend, and may this Sunday renew your confidence that His hand is on our world.
