Why is Reading the Bible so Important?
Dear Calvary Family,
Reading and knowing the Bible is one of the most important aspects to growing in our faith.
Reading scripture is not just to acquire more knowledge about God or biblical history, but that’s part of it.
Reading the Bible will help us to know what the voice of God sounds like compared to the other voices vying for our attention.
Reading the Bible will help us to value the things that God values rather than what our culture values.
Reading God’s Word will ground us in truth when we are bombarded with lies from the enemy.
But reading and understanding the Bible can be really hard!
First, I will say that it’s important to try even when it’s hard. That’s a good lesson for all of life, and it’s very true that the Bible gets easier to understand the more time we spend in it. We also want to help you as much as we can.
That’s why we are starting a new Midweek Series happening each Wednesday, February 19 - March 19, called How (NOT) to read the Bible. It’s based on a great book and video teaching by Dan Kimball that helps us correct a bunch of the mistakes that we can often make while trying to understand what we are reading - especially with the most misunderstood and difficult parts of the Bible. Yes, there are puzzling and disturbing Bible passages that can seem anti-woman, anti-science, pro-violence, pro-slavery or other issues that trouble us today. . . But there are explanations!
So, come join us for How (NOT) to Read the Bible tonight at 7:00pm in Fellowship Hall. This class will be taught by Matt Doan, Eric Wakeling and possibly some other surprise guests from week to week. See all the details for what's happening, including fun and faith-building programs for Nursery up to High School, at CalvaryLife.org/Midweek.
And even if you can’t come to the class, just start reading your Bible!
May the Lord bless you and keep you,
Eric Wakeling
