Call to Prayer and Action for a Pro-Life Ethic

12/8/21 | The Weekly | by Eric Wakeling

    Dear Calvary Family,

Abortion is all over the news and social media right now because the Supreme Court is considering the case from Mississippi challenging the issue. Chief Justice Roberts attempted to bring a middle ground solution that would simply agree to make abortions illegal after 15 weeks rather than 23 weeks. However, it seems that the conservative justices are potentially leaning toward abolishing Roe v. Wade outright.

I have been praying and hoping since my childhood for something to happen to drastically limit, if not eliminate abortions because it is my core belief that pre-born children within their mother’s bellies are lives and not just a clump of cells. They are bearers of God’s image and are an eternal soul. I would ask you to join me in praying for the Supreme Court to help bring that closer to fruition in the legal world.

I also want to invite you to pray, to prepare, and to take action steps for abortions to be reduced and eliminated through all avenues beyond the world of laws and court decisions. I feel like a large percentage of evangelicals act as if the only way to reduce or eliminate abortions is through legal processes. Sometimes when a group of people have been working toward a goal for so long - like overturning Roe v. Wade - they can forget the foundation of the goal itself. The goal is to drastically reduce and hopefully eliminate the abortion of babies here in the United States and around the world. I want to remind us that it’s very important to accomplish this in the courts and laws but it is clearly not the only way. We can and will reduce the amount of abortions through caring for the whole life.

This is why it’s so important to have a Pro-Life view rather than a Pro-Birth view. This is why we at Calvary Church have chosen to invest in multiple avenues for living out our Pro-Life ethic that is based on God’s love for all people. We support the following ministries and non-profit organizations:

    • Obria Medical Clinics (pregnancy care, ultrasounds, testing, consultation, emotional support for women who have had abortions, and other well-woman care)
    • Safe Families for Children (family preservation through radical hospitality and generosity)
    • Orphan Care Ministry of Calvary Church (supporting adoption, foster and orphan care initiatives)
    • Acres of Love (rescuing children and creating families in forever homes in South Africa)
    • Adoption Fund of Calvary Church (supporting people financially in the process of adoption)
    • Compassion International (releasing children from extreme poverty)
    • His Refuge (ministry to refugees and displaced people)
    • Uniquely Knitted (healing the traumas of infertility)
    • SoulRapha (holistic wellness for aging care communities)
    • Calvary Church Bridge Ministry (engaging and empowering those with special needs and disabilities)
    • Calvary Church Pop Up Pantry (providing food for those in need)
    • Calvary Church Care Ministry (counseling, recovery, and other advocates for emotional health)
    • Calvary Church Faith & Public Policy Ministry (equipping the church to think biblically about politics and stand for justice in our community and nation)

These are just a highlight of ways that we are attempting to care for the whole life. If Roe v. Wade is overturned; I believe that we will need to step up our efforts in the area of caring for young parent(s) in poverty, women needing to choose adoption for their baby, emotional and mental health struggles, supporting Safe Families, foster care and adoption, and many more.

Let Colossians 3:12-14 be a guiding ethic for your life. 12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.”

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
    Eric Wakeling
