A Church United
I have a confession to make…
A few weeks ago, during the closing prayer at church, I opened my eyes.
Eric was ending the service with the blessing from Numbers 6 that he prays over us each Sunday, and in that quiet moment, I looked around the room. What I saw filled my heart with joy.
I saw old people and young people. Mature believers and some who have just begun their journey with Jesus. I saw people who have recently walked through deep emotional and physical pain, and others who are in a sweet season of joy. I saw business executives and minimum wage workers. People with advanced degrees and those who barely made it through high school. Moms and daughters, grandpas and grandsons. I saw widows and engaged couples.
What I saw was the church.
Our church isn’t perfect—we have our shortcomings and issues. But there is no place I’d rather be on a Sunday morning than gathered with the church.
What we experience when we sing songs of praise, hear the proclaimed Word of God, and greet each other in the courtyard is sacred and special. Yes, sometimes it may feel ordinary or repetitive. Yes, there are Sundays when I leave more tired than when I arrived. But every week as we gather, we are joining something bigger than ourselves.
We’re anchored to thousands of years of church history. We’re uniquely in sync with heaven (see Revelation 5). We get to live out the “one another’s” of Scripture—love one another, greet one another, welcome one another, honor one another, forgive one another, bear one another’s burdens. And we get to exercise the spiritual gifts God has given us to build each other up (1 Corinthians 12).
God created the Church for His people—and He created His people to be part of the Church.
This Sunday, May 25th, is something special — United Sunday! We will gather for a family worship service together at 10:00am in the Worship Center with all ages (Nursery-K program is available) and all four language groups that call Calvary home — English, Spanish, Mandarin, and ASL. We’ll sing and worship together, pray for our summer GO teams, study Scripture in Luke 18:31–34, and encourage one another as one united Church.
After the worship service, we’ll go out to enjoy a Party on the Patio—with ice cream sandwiches, bounce houses for the kids, and treats to raise funds for our Albania and Greece summer GO teams.
I can’t wait for Sunday—and I pray you’ll join us.
We are a better church when you are here.
