Two Important Days

5/6/21 | The Weekly | by Eric Wakeling

    Dear Calvary Family,

There are two important days I want to talk about with you.

The first is this Sunday and it’s Mother’s Day! So maybe this email is a reminder to buy a card or make a reservation or whatever you need to do for the moms in your life. Our passage in 2 Timothy this weekend is all about how Timothy’s mom and grandma passed on their faith to him. We are going to focus on how ALL WOMEN can be spiritual mothers to the people God has entrusted to them. Even Paul says that Timothy is his beloved son and they aren’t related in the traditional way, but they are in God’s family. We are God’s family!

I invite you to come and be assured that this Sunday we will honor moms, but we will also honor and challenge all of us to pass on our faith to others. I understand that this is a Sunday that’s an amazing celebration for some and also a really hard Sunday for others. My mom passed away some years back now and I’ve been thinking about her this week and how she passed her faith to me. I’ve shed some tears just working on this sermon and I’m pretty sure I’ll be a bit weepy on Sunday just like some of you. So come and join me as we live out the biblical command to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.”

The second important day is TODAY! It’s the National Day of Prayer. I believe every day is a day of prayer, but today is a day to pray as a nation for God to move in us and through us. I highly encourage you to set aside time to uniquely pray for our country and I have some thoughts on how to do that.

First of all, we believe that God can move mountains, work miracles, and begin movements of the gospel to change the entire world. I believe that it’s Jesus that will change our nation and it’s only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we will see lives transformed. Government programs won’t do that, political parties won’t do that, new legislation won’t do that, and just the right people in positions of power won’t do that either. That’s why we pray! We pray for God to do it!

Secondly, while we don’t believe that government is the answer, we do believe that God has called us to pray for our country, our leaders in government, and for the other spheres of influence in our country. You can see a list of ways to pray for America using the guide from the NationalDayofPrayer.org

In closing, how can we pray for you today? You can share prayer needs, praise reports, or family news anytime with our pastors, elders, and prayer team at CalvaryLife.org/Prayer

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
    Eric
