Why we believe prayer is vital

10/27/22 | The Weekly | by Eric Wakeling

    Dear Calvary Family,

Dependence on God is one of our 12 Core Values as a church and has been an area of focus over the last year. We talked about prayer as a spiritual practice last Sunday in the sermon and we will talk about prayer again this Sunday morning as well. We even have a class happening at 11:00am in the Worship Center called God Speaks that helps us understand how we can listen to God and actually hear from him.

All of that is because we believe that prayer is vital!

I saw a quote in a book I was reading by Skye Jethani called What if Jesus was Serious about Prayer?  I think you would enjoy this book and benefit from the content and enjoyable reading style. Here’s the quote:

“If Jesus was serious, then to whom we pray is more important than how we pray.”

That’s why I spent so much time talking about the thin line between heaven and earth last Sunday and how the wonderful and supernatural presence of God is all around us at all times. WATCH IT HERE IF YOU MISSED IT.

The Scriptures help us know about God and prayer helps us know God. Now, the inverse can also be true, but the majority of the time we have the privilege of communing with God in prayer. We have the honor of basking in his glory and goodness. We get to be in awe of his power and holiness. We can be at ease and embraced by his love and compassion. I almost started all those previous sentences with “we should be” but then God prompted me to convey how this is an honor and privilege.

What a joy to be with God in prayer!

I pray that you will both deeply know about and know personally the God of the Bible - Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I pray that you will experience him in prayer and become completely dependent on him each day.

Please join us this Sunday as we learn more about prayer and as we listen to God and cry out to him with the requests he has placed on our hearts.

And let’s also be praying for Light the Night to be a true outreach to our community and that those who attend would feel loved and welcomed to the church and ultimately to Jesus. You can see ways we still need your help below.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,
    Eric
